FANDOM

  • As many of you will have noticed, in the past couple of days, a number of videos have appeared at the tops of certain articles. These videos play automatically when the page is loaded, and upon completion, they then automatically cycle through a playlist of other videos from the FANDOM platform.

    We sincerely apologise for their sudden and unforseen appearance. They were created by FANDOM itself independent of Halo Nation, and inserted into our pages without warning.

    To be clear: Halo Nation had no involvement in the creation of these videos, and was not consulted or notified before they were placed on our articles.

    With that in mind, we intend to place a template at the top of each of the affected pages in order to communicate to readers what these videos are, why they are present, and to provide a link here, where they can post their thoughts and feedback. This template will remain on the articles while the Halo Nation administration contemplates the best route to take from here.

    In the meantime, we would like to gauge the opinion of our community on the matter while we decide how to approach this situation. Please use this thread to discuss the videos, and give feedback - both to us (the Halo Nation administration) and to FANDOM (the creators of the videos).

    Also, note that while it is likely that Halo Nation will take action to have these videos removed, we cannot guarantee that we will be successful - though we will certainly try our best if we do take action.

    TL;DR: The videos that have appeared at the top of numerous articles are not under Halo Nation's control, and we apologise for their abrupt appearance. If you have anything you would like to say about them, please leave your thoughts below.

    • If you would like to see an example of one of these videos, here is a list of all the (known) pages that have had videos placed on them:

      Any pages that have these featured videos on but are not in this list should be reported to the administration, so they can be added to the list.

      If you have an account and would like to hide these videos from view, simply add the following code to this page:

      .featured-video__wrapper {
          display: none !important;
      }

      This modifies your personal CSS, in order to prevent the page element that contains the video from appearing on the page.

    • In all seriousness though, you think Wikia would stop and think about how their actions caused the last group of users on this domain, Halopedia, to leave.

    • I honestly wouldn't mind the videos as much if I weren't a primarily mobile user. While the number of known articles affected is relatively small, I still don't like that an autoplaying video takes up literally half of my screen. When I'm trying to get information, it's kind of an annoyance.

      I've run into the same thing on Acepedia and Wookiepedia as well.

    • I don't mind videos that serve as an overview of a subject. That can be helpful. However, videos that are obtrusive, autoplaying, and not subject to normal Wiki democracy have no place on a Wiki.

      I don't understand this decision at all. Autoplaying videos are hated universally across the internet.

    • This is yet one of various Wikia/FANDOM's so-called 'upgrades to wikis' that are uninformed of and leave a bad taste in my mouth. Wikia's welcome by implementing such ideas, yes, but when it's forced and/or directly applied without prior notice and taking the userbase's feedback. All in all, I'm wholly opposed to these videos.

      Even if FANDOM did inform us beforehand, my answer would still be no, since they are redundant and do nothing else that repeat the first paragraph of the intro of the pages, and autoplay themselves too. If it were something else, something actually productive, then I might be okay with it, but the current one isn't.

      Like Grif said, FANDOM should've learned by now that unnecessary additions without consent from the userbase can cause bigger events, like Halopedia's and various other wikis' splitting from Wikia We'll have to hope they stop doing this, even if that's something rather unlikely.

      Anyways, these are just my two cents on the matter: I've already voted on the poll, and expect FANDOM to remove them.

    • My thoughts on the matter as follows:

      The idea of featured videos on articles is not inherently a bad one. Providing wikis with more ways to engage and inform their readership is actually, in my opinion, a very good idea. However, the problem with these particular videos is that the wikis themselves have not been entrusted with these tools; FANDOM has.

      Wikis are built on collaboration and cooperation; it is the very cornerstone upon which they are founded. Without these two fundamental concepts, nothing like Halo Nation or Halopedia could have been created. No single person or organisation could produce something of this scale, when it took thousands of hours devoted by hundreds of people across the 13 years of its existence just to get where we are now.

      These videos represent the antithesis of both of the aforementioned qualities.

      Halo Nation has no control over these videos whatsoever, so users cannot modify their content, change how they behave or appear on the page, or even remove them. The only party with any of those abilities is FANDOM themselves. Clearly, this situation cannot lead to cooperation. In fact, it stifles it.

      Furthermore, Halo Nation was not consulted about the videos before they went up. Nobody at Halo Nation was informed by FANDOM of their existence - before or after they were published. We found out about them thanks to a disgruntled user who contacted me via Discord. These, obviously, are not hallmarks of cooperation.

      The featured video program, in its current form, flies in the face of everything Halo Nation - and wikis in general - stand for. As a result, I will oppose these videos and any others like them until there is a significant amendment to the featured video program, which would allow for wikis to edit, format, replace and even remove the videos at their own discretion.

      Adding to the above comment, on every single Wiki I see these on, these videos are noted to be of rather poor quality (if not very poor quality), wrong terminology, false information or a combination of just about all of these factors or have every single one of them slapped into it. Not sure why they decided to do this, anyway...

    • All in all, these videos should be smacked in the wrist.

      Sorry to hear that. We're going to give it a couple more days, to accumulate feedback through the poll and this thread, and then we'll contact FANDOM about this. Hopefully we'll be able to get them removed.

    • So... while this isn't directly about Halo Nation, moreso about Wikia videos in general. While on break at work today, one of my coworkers went to look up something on a different wiki via google, and had the autoplay video thing pop up on their phone. He proceeded to call it a "stupid ad" and quickly backed out of Wikia completely to find a result on a different site. While I don't know how often this sort of scenario does occur, or if it's a typical reaction or atypical, I've seen in person someone driven away from viewing an article from one of these videos.

      Given my coworker's reaction to an autoplay video taking up most of his phone screen, I'm finding myself in a really awkward place of not recommending the wiki to people at the moment, or at least one of the 21 high-traffic pages listed above. There are already other sources for Halo information online, and quite frankly, it seems these videos are making them a better choice for people. Halo Nation aims to be an inviting and welcoming site, but autoplay content has the potential to instead drive viewers away.

      I understand and realize that a single anecdotal event is far from a useful sample size. However, this experience has given me a disturbing perspective on the scenario Halo Nation and many other wikis find themselves in.

      This is a very kind offer but right now, we're hopeful that this issue can be resolved without us having to consider alternatives to FANDOM/Wikia.

    • UPDATE

      Moments ago, I sent a message to FANDOM, on behalf of the entire Halo Nation administration, asking to discuss these videos - as well as several other issues we've had with recent changes FANDOM has made - in the hopes that we can reach a compromise. I will continue to keep you all updated as the dialogue between FANDOM and the Halo Nation administration progresses.

      We remain committed to having these videos removed, since our community is clearly in opposition to them, as evidenced by the main page poll and the responses in this thread.

    • Hello, everybody, I'm the Community Manager for the gaming communities on FANDOM, and I wanted to give the community an update. I have been speaking with your admin Dab1001 about the feedback so expect more news on this in the near future while we find a happy medium.

      Most of the feedback I see the community having is about the autoplay function of our Featured Videos. This function can be turned off by any user by clicking the gear icon in the bottom right corner of any video and toggling autoplay off. This option works for both desktop and mobile.

      The videos scrolling function can also be closed at any time by simply clicking the close button in the upper right corner of the video.

      If users would like to be more involved in the process of creating scripts or videos for any wiki, they can do so using our community script form.

    • lmao let's completely ignore the fact that these piles of garbage were put on here without anyone's consent, or that a whopping 81% of the poll said that the entire concept is terrible

      Honestly, this is trademark behaviour for Wikia staff. Completely putting the overwhelming negative outcry on the back bench and then pretending we're only mad about one tiny part of the entire steaming shitshow. The people here want the videos removed, clearly, but nooo, let's pretend we only want them to stop autoplaying. This kind of condescending bullshit is why people are growing more and more fed up with your antics.

    • Being able to turn off autoplay isn't enough; you should HAVE to click the video to play it. Plus, with the often wrong or reiterated information, and the lack of being able to edit it... It's not good at all. Especially when the mobile version insists on throwing it up like some god awful pop up ad, which most people are conditioned to click back and leave the site upon seeing.

      Sorry if someone asked this before and I didn't see, but is it possible to add the code to the Wikia CSS instead of Personal CSS to effect the videos for everyone?

      If we were to do that, Wikia staff would immediately undo the edit to the sitewide CSS, lock the CSS from our editing, and then globally block the Halo Nation staff member(s) that did so.

      Interfering with the loading of site elements by introducing code into the site CSS and JS is against the Terms of Use for Wikia.

      Wikia should give us the option to add such videos without forcing them on any community or specific article.

      They really don't give a flying fuck about our opinion. I am on some other wikia, and they also implement shitty features there. The only "safe" wikia I've seen is the one I co-own, and even then, ads are being added
